Hand in your notice

If you are renting your home, make sure that you hand in your notice to let your land lord, or estate agent know that you're moving out.

  • Check your tenancy agreement.
  • Make sure you give the correct amount of notice, this is usually between 1 and 2 months.
  • Watch out for minimum term agreement, these can be between 3 and 12 months, if you leave early you may have to pay a fee for breaking the agreement.
  • Give them the preferred date that you intend on leaving.

Your Employer

Let your employer know that you are moving home.

  • You may want to book some time off work, we would advise that you need to book off moving day, the day before, and the day after.
  • If you are moving out of the area and you haven't already, you may need to hand in your notice to your employer.
  • Check your employment contract, some professions may even need up to 3 moths notice.

Declutter - a fresh start

When you're moving home, it would be nice to have a fresh start, right? Try getting rid of things that you don't need, that are broken, or you no longer use. This will help you when packing, it will give you more space, and less clutter in your new home.

  • Take things to charity shops, or give it away
  • Sell it online - Try Facebook marketplace or eBay
  • Maybe even have a car-boot sale?

For anything that is damaged, or that you're struggling to get rid of - use our waste removals service.

Another option is, you could store items, and deal with them at a later date, see the next section for more details.

Removals, Storage & Cleaning Services

Although we advise that you give at least a months notice for moving home, we do sometimes have last minuet dates available, we are a quality service at great prices. If your possessions need putting in to temporary storage, this is also a good time to reserve a lock up. Your house may need a clean before handing it back over to the landlord, or new owner. You may want to save time and effort, maybe think about booking a cleaning service

Moving with children

If you have kids, you'll want to make sure that you tell the school you are moving home. If you are moving out of area, you should enquire about school placements, make sure their placements in their new school's are confirmed sooner rather than later. If your move is out of school term times, you may want to sort out child care arrangements for moving day.

Moving with pets

Sometimes animals can feel a bit overwhelmed when moving home, they can also cause trip hazards while we are working. If you can book the kennels, a cattery, or make sure a friend, or family member is available to look after your pet on moving day, this can really help. Some dog grooming/walking companies may even pick up your dog for you.

Packing materials

Before you begin packing your belongings, you will probably need to acquire some packing materials. See our guide to packing - everything you may need to know about packing, this also explains what size boxes to use for different items.

Please read our terms & conditions, like any other removals company, we can not be responsible for any breakages that occur due to unsatisfactory packing. This is why we ask you to read our guide to packing, pack at your own risk. Alternatively you can use our professional packing service for guaranteed safe transit of your possessions.

Change of address

Over the next few weeks, you should start informing the relevant people, companies, and authorities about your change of address, this includes:

  • The local council - Council tax
  • Your employer if you haven't already
  • Your utility companies - Gas, electric & water
  • Your medical providers - GP & Dentist
  • Contracts - Your phone, internet & TV package providers
  • Your banks - Bank, credit cards, or loan providers
  • The DVLA - V5 & Driving license
  • TV licensing
  • Inland Revenue - Passports

  • insurance providers - Vehicle, home, pets, and travel insurance.

make sure that you keep all of your documents together in a safe place such as a folder, you may also want to include, your house deeds, tax paperwork, birth certificates, marriage certificate, passports, and driving license.

Begin Packing

So now that you have got rid of any clutter and bought your packing boxes & materials, you can start to pack some of your less essential items. If you have a spare room, a loft, garage, or shed, maybe these could be great places to start? Try packing at least a few boxes each day over the next few weeks. Moving home is no easy task but hopefully our to do list is helping, contact us if you need any help or advice.

Packing, packing, and more packing

This is when you really need to get into packing everything that you can live without for a little while. Pack your ornaments, pictures, mirrors, all the clothing that you're not going to wear over the next few weeks, empty all the draws that you rarely go in, don't forget to write on each box the contents & room it will be going to.

Check for issues

Check with your solicitors, or letting agent that everything is going ahead as planned, if there are any delays, or anything changes, we would need to know as soon as possible.

Essential items

While packing up your last of your belongings you may want to keep in mind a few essential items that you may need for moving day. You may want to transport these with you, in your car, if not then they will be the last items to go on the van.

Family:

  • Bedding, Toiletries - toilet paper, toothpaste, toothbrush, shampoo/soap, hand soap, towels
  • Change of clothing & pajamas for the whole family
  • First aid kit & any medication
  • Keys, wallet, phones
  • Important documents

kids:

  • Travel cot, nightlight, favorite toy - eg. Tablet/laptop, headphones, chargers, teddy, coloring book

Pets:

  • Food, lead, collar, toys, bowls, litter box, waste bags, cage, medications.

Food & drinks for the day:

  • Disposable plates/cups/cutlery, Dinner, or a takeaway menu, breakfast, snacks, water, kettle, tea/coffee, mugs, sugar, milk, juice.

For Cleaning

Dismantling Furniture

Most furniture can be transported without the need to dismantle it, some may need dismantling if its to large, or heavy, for example a large wardrobe located upstairs.

If you haven't already organized for us to dismantle and build your furniture, give us a call. Otherwise, you should probably start dismantling these a good few days before the move if possible, to give your self enough time. Please remove ALL screws and other fittings as these can be easily damaged in transit if they are sticking out. Place the screws and fittings in a sealed bag and keep it with the the furniture that its for.

The day before moving day

The final rush

so, your belongings, including most of the essentials should be packed up by now. keep in mind that we usually load the larger items first.

  • Please put all the boxes in one place, out of the way if there is space, and you're physically able to do so (don't put your back out.)
  • You may want to start cleaning now if you have space to get around.

Check your arrangements

If we haven't already been in contact, give us a call, we will have a quick chat to see where you are with things, so we have a heads up if you need any extra help.

It may have been a while since you booked your storage facility, give them a call to make sure they have all the information they need.

If you have pets, check to make sure your arrangements are going ahead as planned.

Lets Get Things Moving!

  • Pack up the last few bits, this may be anything you have been using over the last few days.
  • Take your final meter readings for gas, electric, and water - take photos of the meters. Usually you can submit your final meter readings with your utility companies online, or over the phone.
  • You can start to clean the house as we empty each room - you want the property to be presentable to the new owner, or landlord so you can get your deposit back.
  • Once we have loaded the van, do a walk trough of the whole property, garden, and any outhouses to check that its all clear, before we leave.

At your new property

We may need you to be available at your new property to let us know where you want items to be positioned. We will always check that you are happy, and see if there is anything else that we can help with before leaving.
